Trans fat differs from other natually occuring fats. It is a man made fat, produced to make liquid fats into a solid form. It first came to life in margerine, and quickly spread (he heee) to other baking goods, snacks, and packaged foods. Companies love to use trans fat in their products, because the shelf life of these items goes up drastically.
Your body does not break down trans fat very well, and it is a danger to people prone to heart disease. "Just plain don't eat it", says Speedcat Hollydale
Keep in mind that food companies will list trans fat on the Nutritional Information Panel. Some newer margerine products and others that once had this type of fat, now do not, so READ LABLES and stay healthy. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are the best for you when consumed in moderation. Omega 3? GOOD!
If you have more information, or opinions on this matter, be sure to comment!

This is some pretty good advice!!  Does anyone else have anything to add?  Thought of the day:  Everything in moderation is good?

Yeah, everything in moderation is fine I think!  Balance is best really.  I mean, you can eat bad things, but just don't over-do-it.  It's good to mix good things with the bad.  Like sure, have a brownie or go to Burger King once a week.  Just don't forget to excercise a few days a week, eat lots of fruits and veggies, and drink lots of water.  I also think anything with a label on it is bad. Or, in other words, if they have to tell you it's ok to eat, then that should be your first clue!

Just my thoughts... trans fat is ok in moderation!

Trans fat is no good!!  They should make it illegal to use in any foods!  Although, I do agree with Speedcat and Sharon both on some things.  I mean, moderation is ok for the most part.  However, heart disease runs in my family so.. I generally just try to stay away from it!

Trans fat is bad, period!  It's only ok in moderation, if you know what that really means.  All of you should check out this web site I found > http://www.bantransfats.com/.  It literally covers everything!

Read this: There are four kinds of fats: monounsaturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, saturated fat, and trans fat. Monounsaturated fat and polyunsaturated fat are the "good" fats. It is generally accepted that consumption of saturated fat should be kept low, especially for adults. Trans fat (which means trans fatty acids) is the worst kind of fat, far worse than saturated fat.
Partial hydrogenation is an industrial process used to make a perfectly good oil, such as soybean oil, into a perfectly bad oil. The process is used to make an oil more solid; provide longer shelf-life in baked products; provide longer fry-life for cooking oils, and provide a certain kind of texture or "mouthfeel." The big problem is that partially hydrogenated oil is laden with lethal trans fat.

Great site "Coool Kitty"! Thanks :-)

I think the point that we all need to know, is that eliminating Trans Fat, does not mean Fat Free. You can have a hamburger - they do not contain Trans Fat!

But Mikey, we love girl scout cookies man!!  Have a heart.  You at least have to buy them, even if you don't want to eat them.  You can give them away to someones kids!  Not too hard to do!  We just have to support the local girl scouts!! Hey, Mikey, in fact, I was girl scout.  I bet half the country was at one point!

Kids are immnune to transfat I think sometimes??? smile/mad.gif

You mean to tell me that I've been pumping my body full of trans fat for decades now??  I think I ought to sue someone, or some company!  Dang!!  Does anyone know just how BIG the health risks are associated with trans fat?  I mean, yeah, I read all the stuff that's posted here, but what in the heck is the big deal here?  Does it cause heart attacks or something?  Do enlighten me if you would?

Super Lou

Only for you Lou32 - LOL...!!  Please don't be mad at me, but it's a no brainer that it's no good - trans fat!!  Just a way for companies to make more money really!!!  If it isn't natural, it's no good, at least not frequently!!  Like the posts in here, moderation is key!

http://thumbsnap.com/t/9CKCOiqZ.jpg Mardy

Hi! It's Speedcat. A mention of pets leads me to believe that I can "subject jump" a little bit.
Mardy is 6 years old. I was there when he was born.

You can find one of my other dogs in Family Sites / Family Pets ....and by the way, all of our animals are Trans Fat Free.

More on health, pets, and of course - golf, stop in to my site!

Hey Speedcat!  I love the pic man!!  I love the humor too, "and by the way, all of our animals are trans fat free"!  Lol.... I had to quote that back!  So, Mardy is 6 years old now?  I take it he was a puppy in that picture?

The picture is current. Mardy is 3 pounds wringin` wet, and loves to hand out the kisses to unsuspecting recipients. When stopping by Speedie's place, watch out!

I love the dog, he's sooo cute!  So, he's not a puppy?  Wow, he's a little feller isn't he?  He sounds like quite the affectionate little dog!  We used to have one like that, but it was a poodle.  So, what kind of dog is that you have?  Oh, byt the way, our dog was trans fat free too, lol!

Mardy is a "Pure Breed Chihuahua" ....although I think chipmunk DNA somehow entered the picture.
