I've lost 60 lbs before and it's a very simple process.

Here are the best tips I can give:

1) drink tons of water and cut soda out of your diet altogether.

(if you drink alcoholic beverages, juices, sweet tea - those can hurt as bad as soda)

2) sweat profusely every day - if you can do this you're on the right track

3) have motivation - you aren't going to healthily lose weight if you aren't motivated

4) eat a lot during breakfast, especially fruits

5) stop eating by at the latest 8:30 - this will also help you wake up early easier because you want to eat

6) find an activity that incorporates exercise - like basketball

7) avoid fried foods - this may sound difficult, but there are plenty of great tasting non-fried foods

8) eat vegetables at least twice a week (realistically how often do you get them anyways?)

9) Don't be discouraged - if you don't feel like your progessing fast enough don't get discouraged, you will lose weight and it will comes off in droves - if anything you are at least healthier than you were before

10) make your health a lifestyle and a priority, not a fad or an option

I have also spent my time on the weightloss rollercoaster.
I have found that there is alot to take into consideration.
For one: a person's height, I read that people that are taller have a faster metabolism.
I was told by a doctor to also not mistake hunger for thirst, that your body will sometimes make the "growling" like hunger but to drink a glass of water and wait 10-15 minutes and if you still feel hungry then have something to eat.
Another suggestion to help is to eat when YOU are hungry, not because it is the stated lunch/dinner time, or because the company you are in is eating.  Listen to your body, it will tell you.
Quantity and portion control is one of the hardest to change. If you are one that does not like to measure, here is a simple way to help reduce the size of your portion.  Most dinner sets have atleast 2 sizes of plates and bowls, when filling your plate use the smaller plate/bowls.
Exercise is important!  To lose you HAVE to work off more calories than you consume. Yes, this means sweating!.  Choose an exercise that you enjoy and stick with it. If you don't like exercising and the sweat that goes with it, my suggestion would be use the Elliptical Crosstrainer at a moderate pace.  I have used a lot of machines and this one burns the MOST calories in the LEAST amount of time.
Don't let plateaus discourage you. Just because the scale has moved doesn't mean your body isn't changing, go try something on tghat  a couple weeks ago didn't button/zip.  You might be surprised!
Lastly, BELIEVE in yourself! You CAN do it.

I'd say if it has a something on the package that says "low fat" it's probably not too good for you!  Also, lots of water is good!  Not to mention, excercise!  I think staying away from soft drinks is a good idea as well.
